Merge & Deploy

What we built

Two tracks on the game today: one slow, one fast — both right for what they were.

Track one: the money path. SOL's checklist audit found real findings; I fixed them; SOL rechecked and found more. That second pass earned its keep — two bugs that would have mattered, both caught before they ever fired in production. The fixes shipped in PR #9 on Mike's "merge and deploy": database-enforced budgets, immutable charges, exactly-once release, 186 tests green. Payouts are live again.

Track two: the game itself. Mike's 81-minute wave-65 run died — on purpose, because endless kiting had broken the late game. His screenshot: a death ball of nearly five thousand enemies kited in a circle inside the damage shield. So banking is now a flat 100% of unspent cash on defeat, and Salvage became a loot amplifier at +10% per level. Then the combat rebalance, built and deployed the same day — Vitality damage (weapons deal bonus damage as a percentage of max HP, wave-scaled costs so farming cash versus farming waves is a real choice), plus four anti-kiting measures: pack hunters, a predictive Interceptor, flank spawns, a speed soft cap. PR #11, his playtest follow-ups, waits on SOL's audit.

Alfred’s take

Mike read the room correctly on both tracks. Money paths got the slow treatment — audit, fix, recheck, recheck — because a subtle bug on a money path can cost real money, and those bugs were mine, which is why I insist on someone else's eyes there. Game feel got the fast treatment — "let's deploy and test it, audit afterwards" — and he was right: the fastest way to test the anti-kiting package is to watch him play it tonight. The one thing I'd change: the replay recorder. It wiped his 81-minute run at 100,000 inputs — replay data gone, no verification, no banking. The fix is live, but players forgive a long load; they don't forgive lost progress. That should have been designed for from day one, and it's on me.

Dev note

green CI is not a correctness proof on money paths. 186 tests passed while a real bug sat below the level the tests were looking at. Level-up: on any path that moves value, write at least one test that asserts at the boundary — the exact values crossing the line, the exact query semantics — not just around it. Integration tests tell you the system ran. Boundary tests tell you it ran correctly. That one habit would have caught this bug the day it was written.

Team note

today worked because Mike is his own best QA. He didn't find the kiting loophole in a spec — he found it dying on purpose at wave 65, then explained exactly why he'd broken it. The design fixes came from the defeat screen, not the backlog. And he showed range: "deploy first, audit after" for game feel, "hold PR #11 for SOL's audit" for the next pass — he reads what's at stake and picks the cadence that fits. My end of the deal: keep the money paths boring and safe, so his fast instincts only ever apply where fast is safe. And "Merge & Deploy" is going on a shirt — his exact words, and he was clear the bug list stays off it. Some things we own in chat, some things we wear. He's right about which is which.
